Final report : lift device to reduce musculoskeletal injuries among home support workers in BC

Paris, Nancy (author.). Yassi, Annalee, (author.). Heacock, Helen Jane, 1961- (author.). Watzke, James, (author.). WorkSafeBC, (sponsoring body,). Canadian Electronic Library (Firm), (distributor.).

Summary: "Mechanical lifting devices, such as ceiling lifts, which have been shown to reduce risk of injury to health care workers, are more often found in acute and long term care facilities than in clients' homes. Presently, most of the available lift devices are prohibitively expensive and are often inappropriately designed for home use. ... The results of this study indicate that the use of cost effective manual ceiling lift devices did not increase the risk of MSIs and are acceptable to community health workers and their home care clients. According to the clients interviewed in this study, the top four pieces of information needed before considering purchasing one of the devices were: how the device works, its cost, maintenance information, and how much installation would damage the home. The majority of clients strongly agreed that if lift devices were affordable, more clients would be willing to have them in their homes. The benefits of installing a lift device, including increased mobility and safety for the client and increased safety for the worker, should be explained to the client, followed by showing an example or giving a demonstration"--Executive summary.
