Summary: Fifteen-year-old Françoise Laurent, orphaned in eighteenth-century New France, escapes her life of poverty by taking a job as maid to the wife of a wealthy fur trader, but when she is caught stealing a pair of gloves, her mistress, Madame Pommereau, has her tossed in jail, and she finds herself facing death by hanging unless she can figure out how to escape.
