Friend (U. of North Carolina at Greensboro) and Cook (California State U., Dominguez Hills) provide preservice and current teachers with a guide to collaboration skills needed when providing services to students with disabilities and other special needs. Skills relate to communication; interpersonal problem solving; co-teaching; indirect service models like consultation, coaching, and mentoring; awkward and adversarial interactions; role-specific collaboration, especially with paraeducators; and interactions with parents and families. This edition has a new chapter on community and interagency collaboration; updates to the coverage on response to intervention; discussion of e-partnerships; more examples and applications for general education teachers, related services professionals, English as a second language teachers, and other specialists; some reorganization; emphasis on integrated models of communication and interviewing as a vehicle for building skills for asking appropriate questions and making effective statements; and updates to the chapter on teams to focus on practices rather than theory and types. It also has new case studies and information on student collaboration. The chapter on practical matters has been deleted, although topics such as planning time and scheduling have been incorporated throughout. The most widely-used text on the topic of collaboration,Interactions is a guide for preprofessionals and professionals to help them understand and participate effectively in their interactions with other school professionals and parents, in an increasingly diverse world that is also now routinely electronically and globally connected.

Interactions presents theory and conceptual principles heavily seasoned with examples, cases, and applied activities. Written specifically to enable readers to quickly use their skills in professional settings, the book will be a useful tool for preservice educators and practitioners—whether they are engaged in formal instructional settings, a study group, or independent study.
